Help build a home, help build a life!

Help build a home, help build a life!

You’re invited to join a two week, Developing World Connections (DWC) international volunteer trip to Nepal in March 2020. DWC is a Canadian charity that supports international development projects by sending volunteers overseas to support partners with whom they have established long-term and productive relationships. Our team will be working on construction projects with DWC’s local host partner, Creating Possibilities Nepal (CP). CP is a non-political, non-profit social organization that supports many kinds of projects to help the Nepalese people rise out of poverty.

WHEN: March 28 – April 11, 2020

WHERE: Our project is based in the tiny and spread-out villages of Dang District. The team will stay in Dang and be transported each day to the project site.

WHY: Nepal is among the poorest and least developed countries in the world, with one-third of its population living below the poverty line. It is a landlocked country with rugged geography, few natural resources and poor infrastructure. In April, 2015, the country was rocked by an earthquake that killed more than 9,000 people and left thousands injured and homeless.

THE PROJECT: We will be constructing a house and/or latrines for a family in need of proper and sanitary housing. The houses are small, typically only 15 x 25 feet and made of bricks with a steel roof. That’s not much by most standards, but having a solid home will provide protection from the elements, improved sanitation, and a secure place to raise children. Additionally, latrines directly improve families’ health, safety, security and convenience through hygienic waste disposal.

SKILLS & EXPERIENCE: CP hires local, skilled labour who will provide onsite training and guidance. Tasks include hand digging earth, hand mixing cement, carrying and wheelbarrowing materials such as gravel and bricks, placing drain pipe, assembling walls and a tin roof, and associated finishing work. We will work with the local tradesmen, at our own pace and to our capacity for five days a week, 8am-4pm (approximately). Time is given for rest and for you to interact with the community.

MEALS & ACCOMMODATIONS: Please note, this is NOT volun-tourism! The accommodations, located in Dang, are by no means luxurious, but they are comfortable and clean. The food is prepared hygienically and dishes range from local to standard Western fare.

COSTS: The program fee is approximately $2800. This includes in-country food, in-country ground transportation, in-country accommodation, project costs and a direct donation to the project. This does NOT include flights. However, the entire program fee and flight costs are 100% tax deductible when paid through DWC (ask for details).
